About Us

What is the Additional Languages and Intercultural Council?

ALIC is a specialist council of the Alberta Teachers' Association

Specialist councils have been created to provide professional development and support teachers in a wide range of subject areas and roles within the public education system. The ALIC facilitates professional development activities, encourages fellowship and dialogue among teachers, publishes a newsletter and peer-edited professional journal and advocates in the area of additional language and intercultural education.

We have many supports in place to assist language teachers in Alberta. Take a peek at our home page to see what's coming up for this year.

Objectives

The ALIC enables Alberta teachers to become more aware of the issues of culture and additional languages and acts through the Association as an advocate for the advancement and promotion of additional languages and intercultural education.

Activities

ALIC seeks to enhance the knowledge, skills and understanding of teachers in the areas of additional language and culture studies by providing preservice and inservice education, disseminating information about existing practices, programs and resources in additional languages and intercultural education, and encouraging research into innovative practices, programs and resources in additional languages and intercultural education.

ALIC provides advice and expertise to the Association on learning and working conditions, curricula and teacher preparation related to additional languages and intercultural education.

ALIC also organizes an annual conference to give teachers of additional languages and intercultural education an opportunity to network and to share ideas and knowledge about their specialty.

Publications

ALIC produces a peer-reviewed academic journal entitled Notos, as well as a newsletter-style informal publication entitled Zephyr.
